Rams grab another Ravens’ WR, Williams

September 7th, 2010 by novafantasysports

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that the St. Louis Rams have aquired another former Baltimore Ravens' WR in Demetrius Williams. Williams is a 6'2" 197 pound former fourth-round pick out of Oregon. He has had durability issues throughout his whole career and is coming off a sprained right ankle.

Fantasy Impact: The Rams can't go wrong in picking up any WR at this point. Their WRs are extremely young and really have no solid starting WR since Donnie Avery went down in the Rams' preseason game against the Patriots. Hopefully for St. Louis one of them will seize the opportunity and emerge as a Sam Bradford go-to-guy.

Steelers name Dixon starting QB

September 7th, 2010 by novafantasysports

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that the Pittsburgh Steelers have named QB Dennis Dixon to be the starting quarterback for their opening game against the Atlanta Falcons. QB Ben Roethlisberger is currently serving his four-game suspension, and QB Byron Leftwich is out indefinately with a sprained knee. Dixon was chosen over QB Charlie Batch because of his strong performance in the preseason.

Fantasy Impact: Dixon not only has a strong arm, but he is especially dangerous when he's forced to make a play with his feet. Expect the Steelers to run the ball, though, since Dixon hasn't had much experience in a regular season game. He is a good pickup to replace a starter in week one if he has a less than favorable matchup.

49ers Pick Up Troy Smith

September 6th, 2010 by novafantasysports

Update: The San Francisco 49ers have signed free-agent QB Troy Smith, the team's official website reports. Smith was released by the Ravens over the weekend, and to make the move possible, the 49ers released QB Nate Davis.

Fantasy Impact: Smith will not battle QB Alex Smith for the starting spot, be he could challenge David Carr for the backup spot. It is definitely not worth looking at Troy Smith in fantasy since he will not see playing time. Even with an injury to Alex Smith, if Troy Smith was to get playing time he would still likely not be worth looking at in fantasy football.

Seahawks Sign Brock

September 6th, 2010 by novafantasysports

Update: According to the team's official website, the Seattle Seahawks have signed free-agent DE Raheem Brock. Brock spent part of training camp with the Titans but was released on Saturday.

Fantasy Impact: Brock is being brought in to provide depth. He won't start unless the team experiences some injuries upfront, but having more pass rushers is never a bad thing.

Blount Signs With Bucs

September 6th, 2010 by novafantasysports

Update: Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed rookie free-agent RB LeGarrette Blount. Blount was released on Sunday by the Titans after the team was awarded 2 linebackers off of waivers.

Fantasy Impact: Tampa Bay may prove to be a very good spot for Blount. Behind Cadillac Williams there is very little quality depth and experience, so Blount may come in and compete for the back-up spot right away. Blount is a big and elusive back, and Tampa Bay seems like a very good spot for him to prove that he can be an NFL running back.

WR Clayton traded to Rams

September 6th, 2010 by novafantasysports

Update: Yahoo! sports is reporting that the Baltimore Ravens have traded WR Mark Clayton to the St. Louis Rams for a late-round draft pick. Clayton is a former first-round draft pick.

Fantasy Impact: This is a good trade for both teams since the Ravens have recently aquired WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh and therefore have no need for Clayton. The Rams, however, need all the help they can get at WR since their number one wideout, Donnie Avery, tore his ACL in a preseason game against the New England Patriots.
