Cleveland Browns
(4-11) At Houston Texans (5-10)
Date & Time:
December 31, Sunday,
1:00 p.m.
A win last week over a perennial
playoff team may have been the biggest in the Houston Texans'
five-year history. A victory in this week's season finale would
only further build their confidence heading into 2007. Houston
will try to close the season by winning back-to-back games for
the first time in two years when they meet the Cleveland Browns
at Reliant Stadium on Sunday.
The Texans (5-10)
have never ended a regular season on a winning note, and they
haven't won two straight since holding Chicago and Jacksonville
to a total of five points in road wins on Dec. 19 and 26, 2004.
Houston faced Cleveland the following week looking for its first
three-game winning streak, but lost 22-14 at home. Houston had
dropped nine straight to AFC South champion Indianapolis heading
into last Sunday's home game. But Ron Dayne ran for two
first-quarter touchdowns and Kris Brown kicked two field goals
in the fourth quarter, including a 48-yarder as time expired to
give the Texans a 27-24 win.
Dayne, the 1999
Heisman Trophy winner from Wisconsin who's playing for his third
team in three seasons, overcame an injured ankle to set career
highs with 32 carries for 153 yards against the worst run
defense in the league. Dayne has scored all five of his
touchdowns in the last four games, a stretch during which he's
averaged 4.8 yards per carry. His 429 rushing yards since Dec. 3
are seventh-most in the league and more than Edgerrin James
(398), reigning MVP Shaun Alexander (379), Tiki Barber (348) and
Jamal Lewis (267).
Dayne would need
another record-setting effort to set a new personal best for one
season. As a rookie with the Giants in 2000, he ran for 770
yards. Dayne also needs two rushing touchdowns to match his
single-season career high, set with the Giants in 2001 when he
had seven. The Browns have the 30th-ranked run defense, allowing
145.3 yards per game.
Texans
quarterback David Carr bounced back from one of his worst games
as a pro with a serviceable effort. Carr was picked off a
career-high four times in a 40-7 defeat to New England on Dec.
17, but didn't throw an interception in the win over the Colts
as he went 16-of-23 for 163 yards and a touchdown. Carr has 11
touchdown passes and 11 interceptions this season - he hasn't
had a season with more interceptions than TDs since 2003.
Cleveland (4-11),
wrapping up its second season under coach Romeo Crennel, has
already been assured a worse record than its 6-10 mark in 2005.
Crennel said Tuesday that third-stringer and former University
of Miami star Ken Dorsey would start the finale. Starter Charlie
Frye hasn't played since suffering a bone bruise on his right
wrist in a 31-28 win over Kansas City on Dec. 3, and backup
Derek Anderson threw four interceptions before separating his
shoulder in a 22-7 loss to Tampa Bay last Sunday.
Anderson rallied
the Browns to the win over the Chiefs after replacing Frye, but
failed to lead them to a win after that. That leaves Dorsey,
who's thrown eight touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in two
seasons with San Francisco. It's uncertain if Crennel will start
wide receiver Braylon Edwards in the finale. Edwards, who leads
the team with 838 receiving yards and six touchdowns, didn't
start against the Bucs and Crennel again said it was a coach's
decision.
Edwards did not
enter the game until the second quarter, dropped the first pass
thrown his way and finished with two catches for seven yards.
The Browns are 2-1 all-time against the Texans, losing 19-16 in
the last meeting on Oct. 30, 2005.

Seattle Seahawks (8-7)At Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-11)
Date & Time:
December 31, Sunday, 1:00 p.m.
he Seattle Seahawks earned their
fourth straight trip to the postseason last week, but they
haven't looked much like a playoff-caliber team lately. The
Seahawks try to end a three-game losing streak and gain some
momentum heading into the playoffs as they visit the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers on Sunday.
Although Seattle
(8-7) lost to San Diego 20-17 last Sunday, it managed to back
its way into the playoffs after Arizona beat San Francisco
26-20, ending the 49ers' slim playoff hopes. That gave the
Seahawks their third consecutive NFC West title despite their
third straight loss. The Seahawks allowed the Chargers to score
the winning touchdown on a 37-yard pass with 29 seconds left
last week, and have also lost to the 49ers and Cardinals - who
have a combined 11-19 record - during their losing skid.
The defending NFC
champs have not lost four straight games since losing five in a
row Oct. 2-29, 2000, when they were a member of the AFC West.
Seattle has beaten only one team with a winning record this
season - a 23-20 win over Denver on Dec. 3 - and has allowed at
least 20 points in each of its last seven games.
The Seahawks have
lost four of their last six road games, allowing an average of
27.8 points in those games. They have won all three of their
games at Tampa Bay (4-11), though, and are 5-1 all-time against
the Bucs. While the players seem troubled by the losing skid,
coach Mike Holmgren has tried to focus on the positives.
Shaun Alexander,
last season's MVP, ran for 140 yards and scored both Seattle
touchdowns against the Chargers, and has four TDs in his last
four games. However, Alexander has gained only 254 yards on 84
attempts and a touchdown in four road games, and rushed for just
45 yards on 17 carries in his only career game against the
Buccaneers, a 10-6 win on Sept. 19, 2004.
Matt Hasselbeck
threw for 189 yards and two interceptions on Sunday, and has
thrown for 652 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions
during the losing skid. Hasselbeck has a 69.4 quarterback rating
in four December games this season after having a 122.9 rating
in seven December games over the last two seasons. The Seattle
quarterback was 12-of-26 for 147 yards, one TD and one
interception against Tampa Bay two years ago.
The Buccaneers
ended a four-game losing streak with a 22-7 win over Cleveland
on Sunday for its first road win since Dec. 11, 2005. They held
the Browns to a season-low 187 yards, and matched a season high
with four turnovers. Quarterback Tim Rattay made his first start
of the season and finished 16-of-26 for 212 yards.
Rattay came off
the bench the previous week to throw three touchdowns and rally
the Bucs to 28 points in the final 16 minutes of regulation in
their 34-31 overtime loss to Chicago. Tampa Bay is averaging the
second-fewest points (13.6) in the NFL, but has scored 53 points
in its last two games. The Bucs need to finish the regular
season with a victory to avoid their first season with fewer
than five wins since going 3-13 in 1991.

Jacksonville Jaguars (8-7) At Kansas Chiefs
(8-7)
Date & Time:
December 31, Sunday,
1:00 p.m.
Although they need plenty of help,
the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs can still make
the playoffs. To have any chance of reaching the postseason,
though, both the Jaguars and Chiefs need a victory when they
meet at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
The Chiefs and
Jaguars are both 8-7, along with Cincinnati and Tennessee. All
four teams trail Denver and the New York Jets by a game, and if
the Broncos and Jets win on Sunday, they'll claim the AFC's two
wild-card spots. For the Jaguars to make the playoffs for the
second year in a row, they need to win Sunday, then hope the
Jets lose while the Bengals and Titans either lose or tie. The
Chiefs need to win, then have the Broncos lose while the Bengals
and Titans lose or tie to make the postseason for the first time
since 2003.
Simply put, it's
a longshot for either team, which both blew chances down the
stretch to secure a spot. Jacksonville was in great shape to
earn a berth after blowing out Indianapolis 44-17 on Dec. 10.
However, the Jaguars followed that with a 24-10 defeat to
Tennessee before last Sunday's 24-21 home loss to New England,
the same team that beat them in the wild-card round last year.
Kansas City beat
Oakland 20-9 last Saturday, snapping a three-game losing streak
that all but knocked the Chiefs out of contention. Kansas City
was 7-4 after beating Denver 19-10 on Thanksgiving, but crumbled
in a 31-28 defeat to Cleveland on Dec. 3 and totaled only 19
points in losses to Baltimore and San Diego - the AFC's top two
teams. Even with the win over the Raiders, the Chiefs' 4-7
conference record is the worst of the remaining contenders.
Edwards has never
missed the playoffs two years in a row in his time as a coach -
head or assistant. But after going 4-12 last season with the New
York Jets, it appears Edwards will miss again in his first year
with the Chiefs, unless everything falls into place. The Jaguars
are 4-1 all-time against the Chiefs, including a 23-16 victory
in 2002 in the only meeting at Kansas City. Fred Taylor had 114
yards rushing and a touchdown in that contest, and he needs 80
yards Sunday to reach 1,200 for the sixth time in his career.
Taylor and rookie
Maurice Jones-Drew have combined to help the Jaguars rush for
161.9 yards per game, second in the league. With Taylor hobbled
by a hamstring injury, Jones-Drew started in his place and ran
for 131 yards last week against the Patriots, including a
74-yard touchdown run. Jones-Drew has 15 total touchdowns this
season and a team-record 2,046 all-purpose yards. He's scored a
rushing touchdown in seven straight games, tied for the longest
streak by a rookie in NFL history. Curtis Dickey also did it
seven consecutive games for the 1980 Baltimore Colts.
Kansas City
counters with Larry Johnson, who is second in the NFL with 1,651
rushing yards and 16 total touchdowns. He's already set a club
record with 383 rushing attempts and needs 100 yards to break
his single-season franchise-record of 1,750, set last season.
The Chiefs are an NFL-best 20-2 in December home games since
1995, having won 18 straight before losing 20-10 to the Ravens
on Dec. 10. Jacksonville is 2-5 on the road after going 11-5
over the last two seasons.

Oakland Raiders (2-13) At New
York Jets
(9-6)
Date & Time:
December 31, Sunday,
1:00 p.m.
The New York Jets simply have to
beat the lowly Oakland Raiders on Sunday to earn a playoff berth
and complete an impressive turnaround from a year ago. The Jets
(9-6), who finished 4-12 last season under Herm Edwards, fell to
2-3 after a 41-0 loss to Jacksonville on Oct. 8.
But first-year
coach Eric Mangini has gotten his team on track, and after its
13-10 win over Miami on Christmas Day, New York is one win away
from its fourth postseason berth in the last six years. The Jets
are 5-2 since their bye week, allowing an average of 14.1 points
in those games, the third-fewest points in the league in that
span.
While New York is
just one win away from the playoffs, Mangini does not want his
team overlooking the hapless Raiders (2-13), who have lost eight
straight games and are averaging a league-low 11.0 points.
Although Mangini would rather see his team advance to the
playoffs with a win, the Jets can still make the postseason if
they lose to the Raiders, but would need some help. They would
get in if Cincinnati and Jacksonville both lose or tie; if
Cincinnati loses or ties and Tennessee wins; or if Denver and
Jacksonville both lose.
With Monday's win
over the Dolphins, New York won its second straight game, but
has not won three in a row since Nov. 21-Dec. 5, 2004. New York
limited the Dolphins to a season-low 253 yards on Monday, while
holding its fourth opponent in its last six games to a single
touchdown. The Jets offense struggled to get in sync during a
heavy rain during the game, and won on a 30-yard field goal by
Mike Nugent with 10 seconds left. Nugent had four field goals in
last season's 26-10 win over Oakland, and has connected on his
last 15 attempts.
Chad Pennington
was 14-of-29 for 237 yards and a touchdown against Miami, and
has thrown for 601 yards, five TDs and one interception in three
career games against the Raiders. New York has won four of its
last five games, and Pennington has thrown for 1,307 yards while
completing 67.5 percent of his passes in those games. Oakland
has the No. 1 passing defense in the league, though, allowing an
average of only 150.9 yards.
The Raiders are
tied for the seventh-most interceptions with 18, and Pennington
is tied for the sixth-most picks with 16. The Jets have won
their last two over Oakland, but the Raiders lead the all-time
series 19-13-2.
Oakland lost to
Kansas City 20-9 on Saturday night to match the franchise record
for losses in a season, set when it went 1-13 in 1962 - the
season before Al Davis arrived to coach and eventually own the
team. The Raiders were held without an offensive touchdown for
the seventh time, and are on pace to finish with the
fifth-lowest point total in NFL history since the league
extended the schedule to 16 games in 1978.
The Raiders
turned the ball over five times against the Chiefs, and have
committed at least five turnovers in three of their last four
games. The Raiders gained a season-low 179 yards and had a
season-high four turnovers in their loss to the Jets last year.
Quarterback Andrew Walter had two fumbles and threw two
interceptions on Saturday, and has 19 turnovers in 12 games this
season. Oakland is winless on the road, and needs to win Sunday
to avoid going 0-8 on the road for the first time since 2003.

San Francisco 49ers
(6-9) At Denver Broncos (9-6)
Date & Time:
December 31, Sunday,
4:15 p.m.
It may have taken a little luck for
the Denver Broncos to gain control of their postseason chances,
but now they'll do their best to capitalize on those fortunes
and earn a team-record fourth straight playoff berth. The
Broncos can advance to the postseason with a win or a tie
against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday when the teams meet in
the regular-season finale at Invesco Field.
Denver (9-6)
allowed the Cincinnati Bengals to score a touchdown with 41
seconds remaining last Sunday, but the long snap on the
extra-point attempt sailed wide of holder Kyle Larson and the
Broncos held on for a 24-23 victory in snowy conditions. The
Broncos can now make another trip to the postseason with a win
or a tie Sunday, or a Kansas City loss or tie. A victory would
also ensure their fourth straight 10-win season, tying the best
run in franchise history.
The Broncos
seemed well on their way to that mark when they started the
season 7-2, but a four-game losing streak put their postseason
chances in question. They have rebounded with back-to-back wins
thanks in part to quarterback Jay Cutler, who took over for Jake
Plummer on Dec. 3 and has become the first rookie in NFL history
to throw multiple touchdown passes in each of his first four
games. Denver did lose Cutler's first two starts to Seattle and
San Diego, but has won his last two over Arizona and Cincinnati.
One of Cutler's best stretches to date came in the third quarter
Sunday, when he led a 99-yard scoring drive that resulted in
Mike Bell's 2-yard rushing TD to give the Broncos a lead they
never relinquished.
Bell's touchdown
was his eighth of the season, one short of the NFL record for an
undrafted rookie, set by Indianapolis' Dominic Rhodes in 2001.
Tatum Bell, the Broncos' leading rusher with 977 yards, needs
just 23 more for his first career 1,000-yard season. He will
need to take better control of the ball, though, as he has lost
a fumble in each of the last two games. Denver cornerback Champ
Bailey recovered a fumble of his own Sunday and grabbed his
NFL-best ninth interception, giving him three in the last two
games.
The Broncos
snapped a three-game home skid with last week's victory and will
try to improve upon their 13-1 record in their last 14 December
home games. Denver has won its last three home matchups with the
49ers (6-9) and six of the last eight games overall between the
teams, including a 24-14 victory on Sept. 15, 2002, in San
Francisco.
The 49ers have
lost four of their last five games following a season-high
three-game winning streak. They amassed just 223 yards total
offense last Sunday in a 26-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals,
which officially eliminated them from the playoff picture.
Despite his club's recent struggles, 49ers coach Mike Nolan
still hopes the finale will give him a glimpse at next season.
Running back
Frank Gore, who ran for two TDs last Sunday, hopes to have a
defining game of his own as he needs 29 yards to break Garrison
Hearst's team record of 1,570 rushing yards in a single season,
set in 1998. Quarterback Alex Smith failed to throw a touchdown
pass for the first time in six games last week, completing 62.1
percent (18-for-29) of his throws for 190 yards and his 15th
interception of the season.
He will continue
to be without leading receiver Antonio Bryant, who is serving
the second in a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's
substance abuse policy. Nolan expects safety Mark Roman
(sprained ankle) to be on the field Sunday, but left tackle
Jonas Jennings is questionable after dislocating his shoulder.

Arizona Cardinals
(5-10) At San Diego Chargers (13-2)
Date & Time:
December 31, Sunday,
4:15 p.m.
It doesn't matter if LaDainian
Tomlinson reaches the end zone or not, the San Diego Chargers
are finding all kinds of ways to win. The Chargers look to
secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs when they
host the Arizona Cardinals in the regular season finale for both
teams on Sunday.
Tomlinson didn't
score last week for the first time in nine games, but San Diego
still beat Seattle 20-17 for its ninth straight victory. The
Chargers (13-2) have recorded the winningest season in franchise
history thanks in large part to Tomlinson, who has rushed for a
team-record 1,749 yards and scored an NFL-record 31 touchdowns,
but he wasn't needed to keep the winning streak alive. Vincent
Jackson caught two touchdown passes, including a 37-yarder with
29 seconds remaining to lift the Chargers.
San Diego can
clinch the AFC's top seed with a victory over the Cardinals or
if Baltimore loses to Buffalo at home earlier on Sunday. The
Ravens beat the Chargers 16-13 on Oct. 1 and would hold the
tiebreaker if the teams finished tied. San Diego already has a
first-round bye for the first time since 1994, when it advanced
to its only Super Bowl, but hasn't had home-field advantage
since 1980, when it lost 34-27 to Oakland in the AFC
championship game.
After struggling
in Seattle, Rivers will be happy to return to Qualcomm Stadium,
where he's 7-0 as a starter. His first completion last week
didn't come until 3:18 remained in the first half, when he
connected with Jackson for the Chargers' first touchdown, and he
finished 10-of-30 for 181 yards. Two weeks ago, the Pro Bowler
was only 8-for-23 for 97 yards and two interceptions in a 20-9
win over Kansas City.
Shawne Merriman
had three sacks against Seattle and is tied with Green Bay's
Aaron Kampman for the league lead with 15 1/2. Merriman needs
two sacks to tie Gary Johnson's club record, set in 1980,
despite the fact he missed four games because of an NFL
suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer needs one victory to become
only the fifth coach in NFL history with 200 regular-season
wins. He is 6-1 in his career against the Cardinals, including a
23-15 win over Arizona in 2002, the last meeting between the
teams.
Arizona (5-10)
has rebounded from an eight-game losing streak that left the
team 1-8 to win four of its last six games. The Cardinals
eliminated San Francisco from playoff contention with a 26-20
victory last Sunday and finished 4-2 in the NFC West, the best
mark in the division despite being in last place. Still, despite
the recent progress, this could be the final game for Dennis
Green as Arizona's coach. He has one year left on a four-year,
$10 million contract, but the Cardinals have gone 16-31 in his
first three seasons and already have secured their seventh
season in eight years with at least 10 losses.
Kurt Warner will
start for the Cardinals on Sunday after Matt Leinart sprained
his left shoulder before halftime in last week's win. Though the
injury won't require surgery, the rookie from USC will sit out
the final game. Warner, who announced Wednesday he plans to
return for the 2007 season, went 9-of-13 for 105 yards in his
first action since losing the starting job after Week 4. He
threw for 390 yards and four touchdowns in his only previous
start against San Diego, a 57-31 win in 2000 when he was with
St. Louis. Arizona has lost six straight and 16 of its last 19
games against AFC teams. The Chargers lead the all-time series
7-3.
TAKE THE OVER 44
POINTS
VS.
Atlanta Falcons
(7-8) At Philadelphia Eagles (9-6)
Date & Time:
December 31, Sunday,
4:15 p.m.
Jeff Garcia will try to lead the
Philadelphia Eagles to a division title. Michael Vick can still
take the Atlanta Falcons to the playoffs when the two teams meet
in Philadelphia on Sunday. Garcia has led the Eagles (9-5) on an
improbable run to the postseason since starting quarterback
Donovan McNabb was lost for the season with a knee injury in a
31-13 loss to Tennessee on Nov. 19. After losing 45-21 the next
week at Indianapolis, Philadelphia has won four straight -
including their last three on the road against NFC East Division
opponents.
The Eagles
clinched a playoff spot with a 23-7 win over Dallas on Christmas
Day as Garcia was 15-for-23 for 238 yards with a touchdown and
interception to improve to 4-1 as a starter. Philadelphia can
clinch the NFC East for the fifth time in six seasons with a win
Sunday or a Dallas loss to Detroit. If both the Eagles and
Cowboys finish with the same record, the Eagles would win the
division. If the Eagles lose and the Cowboys win, Dallas would
win the division.
Vick and the
Falcons (7-8) have a tougher scenario to reach the postseason.
Losers of two straight - including a 10-3 setback to struggling
Carolina last Sunday - the Falcons, who have lost six of their
last eight since starting 5-2, need more than a win Sunday. A
win, combined with losses or ties by Carolina, Green Bay and the
New York Giants, is the most likely way Atlanta will earn a
wild-card spot. That won't be easy as the Falcons have beat just
one team with a winning record - 29-27 at Cincinnati on Oct. 29
- this season.
Vick, who has
rushed for 1,022 yards, will face an improving Philadelphia
defense, that combined with Garcia's play, has the Eagles
playing the best football of any team in the NFC. The Eagles,
who allowed a season-high 420 yards against Indianapolis on Nov.
26, have allowed more than 400 yards only once during their
current winning streak and yielded just 201 against the Cowboys.
For the second
straight week, the Eagles held an opponent to less than 90 yards
rushing, and they also recorded three sacks. Safety Brian
Dawkins recorded his third interception in his last four games.
Atlanta, the NFL's top rushing team at 185.3 yards per game, was
held to a season-low 83 on the ground against Carolina and is
averaging only 116.3 yards in its last three games. Vick and
running back Warrick Dunn, though, have combined to rush for
2,104 yards this season. Dunn, however, has not rushed for more
than 87 yards in any of his last 10 games.
While
Philadelphia's defense has improved, Garcia has been the key to
the team's resurgence. He led the Eagles to scores on four of
their first five drives against Dallas and is 89-for-136 for
1,091 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions as a
starter. Though Vick is frustrated, the Falcons still need him
to put a charge into the Falcons inconsistent offense. Atlanta
matched a season low for points last Sunday and is averaging
12.2 points in its eight losses compared to 25.2 in its seven
wins.
Vick was 9-for-20
for 109 yards and two interceptions against the Panthers. He's
also struggled in his last three games with a 53.3 passer rating
in that span. Even with a win Sunday, Mora may be looking for
work elsewhere in 2007. Falcons owner Arthur Blank said earlier
this season he would not be happy with a second straight 8-8
season and did not give Mora a public vote of confidence earlier
this week.
Mora, who has a
26-21 record in three seasons with the Falcons, has defended his
performance. Atlanta, which will look to avoid a fourth straight
loss in Philadelphia, won 14-10 in the last meeting between the
two teams at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 12, 2005. It snapped a
four-game losing streak to the Eagles that included a 27-10 loss
in the NFC Conference championship on Jan. 23, 2005.

Green Bay Packers
(7-8) At Chicago Bears (13-2)
Date & Time:
December 31, Sunday,
8:15 p.m.
The Green Bay Packers might have
more on their minds than the possibility of Brett Favre playing
his final NFL game when they visit the Chicago Bears to close
the regular season at Soldier Field on Sunday. The game is
essentially meaningless for the Bears (13-2), who have already
clinched home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, but
the Packers could still be in the hunt for the conference's
final wild-card spot come kickoff. The game was moved from the
afternoon to Sunday evening as part of the NFL's flexible
schedule.
The Packers (7-8)
are one of five teams tied for the final playoff spot and could
know their fate even before kickoff depending on what happens in
games involving the New York Giants on Saturday, and Carolina,
Atlanta and St. Louis earlier on Sunday. If New York loses, then
the Packers would need a win, coupled with either a Rams loss,
Panthers win or Falcons win to reach the postseason.
If New York wins,
Green Bay could remain mathematically alive to win a strength of
victory tiebreaker with the Giants, but would need an elaborate,
unlikely combination of results from around the league to make
that happen. Though the Packers are looking to win their fourth
straight game, they've lost three in a row to the Bears,
including a 26-0 defeat at Lambeau Field in the Sept. 10 season
opener.
Favre is 21-8
against Chicago in his career. He struggled in the September
meeting, however, going 15-for-29 for 170 yards and two
interceptions while being sacked three times. The 37-year-old
quarterback remains quiet on his retirement plans, but will need
to play better than he has in recent weeks to beat Chicago.
Favre was
26-for-50 for 285 yards but threw two interceptions, including
one returned for a touchdown, in Green Bay's 9-7 win over
Minnesota on Dec. 21. He did march the Packers down the field to
set up Dave Rayner's game-winning 44-yard field goal with 1:34
to play. Despite the comeback, Favre has thrown five
interceptions and no touchdowns in his last two games. While
Favre has struggled, the Green Bay defense has allowed the team
to remain competitive in the final month of the season.
Though it's come
against weak opponents - San Francisco, Detroit and Minnesota -
the Packers have allowed 35 total points in their last three
games. Led by defensive end Aaron Kampman, who recorded three
sacks to give him a share of the NFL lead with San Diego's
Shawne Merriman with 15 1/2, the Packers held Minnesota to 104
total yards of offense. Green Bay held Detroit to 142 yards a
week earlier after allowing San Francisco 340 yards on Dec. 10.
On the season, the Packers rank 13th in total defense allowing
321.2 yards per game.
Chicago coach
Lovie Smith is unsure how long his starters will play Sunday as
the Bears try to win their fifth straight game and go undefeated
against the NFC (11-0) for the first time since the 1985 Super
Bowl championship team did it. Smith played all of his healthy
starters in last Sunday's 26-21 win at Detroit, including
quarterback Rex Grossman, who was 20-for-36 for 197 yards with a
touchdown before sitting out much of the fourth quarter.
Grossman's
inconsistent season is back on a positive swing, as he's thrown
five touchdowns and no interceptions in his last three games
after throwing six interceptions and no TDs in his previous two.
Backup Brian Griese was 6-for-9 for 51 yards and led the team to
two fourth-quarter field goals. He is expected to see time again
Sunday.
The Bears' only
concern might be with their vaunted defense, which is allowing
an average of 363.0 yards its last five games, well above its
season average of 288.9 allowed per game. Chicago has slipped
from having the league's top-ranked defense to fifth in the last
four weeks. The unit could get cornerback Charles Tillman back
after missing last week with a back spasms, and will have
starting defensive tackle Tank Johnson back in the rotation
after being suspended for one game for his recent off-field
problems. Chicago's 19-7 victory over Green Bay on Dec. 4, 2005
snapped an 11-game home losing streak to the Packers.
